Working With Templates

What are templates?

Handshake includes a powerful template engine that is used for generating most of the exported documents like email confirmations and CSV exports. We provide basic templates that will do the job for most people, however, every business is different and you'll usually want to tweak at least some element of what you send or export from Handshake.

Handshake's template system allows you to customize these documents as little or as much as you like, which allows you to make it work the way you want, rather than the way we guessed you might want it to.

What should I know before I start trying to edit templates?

Templates are simply a means to generate a particular type of document. For example, Handshake's confirmation emails are HTML documents and the spreadsheet exports are CSV spreadsheets. If you're going to edit the templates, you should probably have at least a basic understanding of these formats.

If you're a little hazy on the format of the document you're trying to work on, you can always try to make edits and if they don't work or you mess up the template somehow, each template provides a link to the default version that you can copy to put everything back the way it was originally.
